Roan Mountain State Park composts manure and other organic materials at the Miller Farmstead year-round. Finished compost is used to enrich garden soil at the farmstead and fill container gardens throughout the park. This volunteer activity includes organizing and turning compost heaps for approximately 1 hour. It's labor intensive and dirty!
Dress to work outside, and bring muck boots (if you have them), a favorite shovel (if you have one) and work gloves. We'll have a stash of shovels, forks and work gloves for anyone who does not have their own.
Regular Service Volunteers who are interested in leading compost management activities, please contact Ranger O'Day to discuss the project. We will be scheduling monthly compost turning volunteer activities and could use your help!
