Come learn about some of the invasive plant species in Tennessee and help us remove invasives along our Bunkum Cave Loop Trail.
This program is intended for ages 12 and up and is perfect for those wanting volunteer in Tennessee State Parks and gain hands-on experience removing invasives. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
You may be asking yourself, what is an invasive species? Invasive species are a non-native plants, animals or organisms that spread rapidly and outcompete native species for resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. This is often due to the lack of natural predators or controls in its new environment. These species can disrupt the balance of ecosystems by reducing biodiversity, changing the habitat, and negatively impacting native species in the area. For this removal we will be focusing on invasive plant species in Tennessee such as multiflora rose, privet, mimosa tree and Japanese stiltgrass. We will also look at other invasives in Tennessee and how to identify them.
SIR Emmalee will meet everyone at Bunkum Cave Loop Trailhead, go over how to identify some of these invasive species, discuss the plan of action, and go over safety precautions upon receiving your equipment.
Volunteers will want to wear comfortable and protective clothes. Choose a breathable material and make sure to wear sturdy and comfortable shoes. Also wear sun protection, bug spray, and bring plenty of water. Restrooms are located at the museum across the street and there is a water fountain by the trailhead.
In the event of inclement weather this event will be cancelled.
