Roan Mountain State Park is partnering with AmeriCorps NCCC from August 8-September 16 to construct a designed 1-mile back country trail on the backside of the Peg Leg Mine Loop Trail titled "Rosebay Ridge Trail." We are looking for volunteers interested in trail work to take part in weekly work days with our team as we work to put the tools to the ground and build a beautiful moderate-difficulty trail and 3 back country campsites.
Each workday will meet at the Visitor Center porch and run from 9:00AM-2:00PM. A list of available shifts are available on this opportunity page. Each shift is limited to 10 volunteers ages 16+. Volunteers are welcome to work partial days as needed, but full day work will require participants to pack a lunch/snacks and a refillable water bottle. Tools and protective equipment (gloves and disposable eye protection) will be provided by the park. Be sure to wear closed-toed work shoes good for hiking.
Work details include the use of hand tools (Pulaski tools, McLeod tools, loppers, rock bars, saws, and sledge hammers) to construct a 2' wide tread natural terrain trail with a total length of approximately 1 mile. At the end of the trail are 3 back country campsite locations where volunteers will help to clear and level the tent pad areas as well as set up camp site materials (fire pits, bear-resistant lockers, benches, and signage). The only potential power tool that volunteers will operate may include weed-eaters.
This will be a great opportunity to learn trail building techniques and design from park staff and our amazing AmeriCorps team of 11 hard working youth. For questions about the project or volunteering, please contact Park Ranger Phil Hylen at Philip.Hylen@tn.gov or at (423)547-3947.
